Have you ever heard people talk about not quitting? It’s usually along with people who say “I’m not a quitter!”. For me, there is a subtle but important difference between quitting and stopping.
Quitting has an energy around it of desperation and fear. I quit! It’s a sense of sudden stopping. Of being pressurised into it by the events around you. It gives the thing you are quitting from a sense of power.
Stopping can be completely different. It gives you back the power to decide when you will, want to, or may stop doing something. Stopping is a place of choice. I choose to…stop working on that project. I choose to…stop accepting work situations I don’t appreciate. I choose to…stop fearing what it is to go it alone. It also applies to stopping and considering now in the moment, what is best for you and your ongoing plans. Sometimes we get so caught up in thinking we can’t quit, that we don’t stop. And when we don’t stop, we don’t take the time to appreciate what we already have, and the progress we already made.
So, when you are thinking about changing the way you work take some time to think about whether you are quitting, or stopping, and what the difference is.
