Claire Sheehan
UK Social Media Coach
My journey into social media has been one that has built up over time. When I trained as a coach, I started connecting with people on different coaching niche membership sites and forums, and started finding that these were a great way to keep connected to the industry and my peers, as well as spotting potential coaching opportunities. From here, I started noticing people talking about different web technologies, using their sites, blogging and social platforms such as LinkedIn. I am a fairly early adopter – I love to have a play with finding more information and I started to find that this information was actually being retained, and was useful to share with people.
As time has gone on, and I’ve moved areas, I’ve also found social media a great way to keep in touch with people I know “in real life” as well as making new connections, some of who I know only through social media, and some of who I have now been lucky enough to connect with, and work with, in real life. I’ve worked independently, within an agency, and in a full time Social Media Manager. Views are my own, not those of my employer!
Keeping up to date…
One thing I do know is how fast social media has been moving and will continue to move. So, I always keep up to date with industry news, so I can pass on best practice, shortcuts and useful information to the people I connect with and work with. What I try to do is make it easier – easier to know where to spend your time, easier to know what works – and what doesn’t!
Aligned to how I work and what I know
My work in social media isn’t done in a vacuum. It’s fully linked into my coaching background and background from working with people. I believe coaching – asking questions, listening and thoughtful responding, can be a great way to work with stakeholders to find out exactly what they want and then help decide what the next steps are – whether that is coaching, training or actual implementation, step by step support.
